As there are many causes of pain and other problems such as numbness, tingling and weakness, associated with the spine (neck and back) and extremities (arms and legs) that may involve nerves, we may perform a very specialized nerve test. These tests are called a Somatosensory Evoked Potential Study (SEP) or Nerve Conduction Study ( NCS). In simple terms, there are like testing a wire to look for a short. In this case the nerve is the wire the carries electrical impulses from your hands and feet to your brain and back. The test can measure these small electrical signals that from the hand and feet as they are sent back to the brain. The test is very sensitive for even minor nerve problems to help the doctor know exactly where and how bad is the damage, as well as what may be causing nerve related pain. This test can help localize a nerve problem with pinpoint accuracy. With this information treatment can be specifically focused to improve or eliminate the problem.

The test is non-invasive, meaning it has no risks or side effects. The doctor will explain the test in detail including the results and what they mean. Wearing loose comfortable clothing will help you be more comfortable during the procedure.
